The fact that this area is so pristine today is due to its past. As part of the “Iron Curtain,” the right bank was a military exclusion zone for decades. Many villages disappeared, and nature reclaimed the land. Today, it is the heart of the Šumava National Park.
Why the right bank?
There are no souvenir shops here and hardly any places to eat. Instead, you’ll find deep spruce forests, mysterious moors, and the ruins of former settlements. The paths often run along the border for kilometers, where you’re more likely to encounter a deer than another person.
Highlight: The Schwarzenberg Canal
An 18th-century technical masterpiece. The walking paths along the canal are flat and offer an almost meditative tranquility beneath ancient treetops.
The ruins of Kapličky
A moving place. Where a village once stood, today you can only find the foundations of the church and a sweeping view across the rolling hills to Austria.

- Arrival: The best way to get to the other side is to use the ferries (e.g. from Frymburk or Horní Planá).
- Catering: Absolutely essential – take plenty of water and provisions with you. Places to stop for refreshments, such as the “Hájovna pod Svatým Tomášem”, are rare.
- Orientation: The hiking trails are excellently marked (KČT marking), but an offline map is advisable due to the sometimes weak mobile network.
