But let’s start at the beginning. How does one actually get to Olomouc?
There are a few options, but you’ll most likely use the train or bus. Or you could even fly:
- Train: Olomouc train station is modern and easy to navigate, and there are three train companies in the Czech Republic that you can use to get there. The first is the state-owned company. Czech Railways České dráhy The only train company where you should be careful when choosing your train. Opt for a Pendolino (marked with “SC” as SuperCity) for the smoothest journey. Even James Bond took one.
Regiojet The trains are old, but perfectly renovated.. RegioJet CZ It offers great service and comfortable seating and is one of my favorites!
Leo Express Stylish black trains that offer good comfort and great food. I personally take the Leo Express at least once a month. - bus The Olomouc bus station is located near the train station. You have to go through an underpass beneath a road, but it’s less than a 5-minute walk. Convenient, right? I’d say the bus is much less comfortable, and the less time you spend on the Czech main road D1, the better.
- Airplane Although there is an “Olomütz Airport,” it’s not intended for civilian air traffic. You could land there if you have a private jet. Do you? Otherwise, the closest airport to Olomouc is in Ostrava, but it’s only used by private jets about 80% of the time. Prague It is served by flights from [location missing]. The nearest fully-fledged international airport is in Vienna, Austria.
- rental car If you want to explore more remote areas in the Czech Republic, renting a car is a good idea.
PRAGUE TO OLMÜTZ
If you don’t have much time to explore more of the country, you should take a direct train from Prague to Olomouc. You can travel with any of the three train companies mentioned above, but I recommend Regiojet, Leo Express, or the Czech Railways Pendolino (SC) train. They all offer Wi-Fi.
The distance from Prague to Olomouc is 250 km. The Prague-Olomouc train takes 2.5 hours, while you’d be lucky to make it in under 3 hours. 250 km is nothing compared to the distance, say, in the USA, but here it essentially means crossing the entire country.
Brno to Olomouc
If you’re from Brno, I’m so glad you also visited the Moravian capital! How did you like it? The train from Brno to Olomouc is shorter, but the journey isn’t direct. You have to change trains in Břeclav, and it takes about two hours.
However, you can take a bus from both Brno to Olomouc and from Olomouc to Brno. In this case, it is much more comfortable than the train and can take as little as one hour.
Find your ideal connection and book it directly on the website of your chosen provider.
Okay, so you’ve traveled from one of the largest Czech cities to Olomouc and are now looking for where to go next? If you’re itching to visit one of the neighboring countries, there are plenty of exciting cities nearby!
