The “Bohemian Alaska”: A portrait of the Abertamy and Boží Dar plateau

Vast moors, stunted pines and a climate that offers a fresh breeze even in summer: The plateau between Abertamy and Boží Dar Gottesgab is not called the “Bohemian Alaska” for nothing. Anyone seeking peace and quiet and a landscape more reminiscent of Scandinavia than Central Europe will find it here at over 1,000 meters.

🌡️ A climate like in the far north

Up here, you’ll find the lowest average temperatures in the Czech Republic. The flora has adapted: rare carnivorous sundews, cranberries, and vast peatlands characterize the landscape. Even in August, always pack a windbreaker!

3 hikes through the wilderness

1. The God-Giving Moor (Božídarské rašeliniště)

Character: A classic nature trail on wooden boardwalks. Ideal for seeing Alaskan flora up close without getting your feet wet.

Route: Circular route from Boží Dar Infocentrum | Distance: 3.2 km | Duration: 1 hour

2. Via Plešivec (Plessberg) to Abertamy

Character: A hike through wooded areas with an ascent to one of the region’s most striking peaks. At the top, an observation tower awaits, offering panoramic views across Alaska.

Route: Abertamy -> Plešivec -> back via the Legends Trail | Distance: 9.5 km | Duration: 3 hours

3. The Wilderness of Hřebečná & Red Pit (Červená Jáma)

Character: Our favorite route for true solitude. Passing old mining pits that now resemble natural gorges, the path leads to a secluded mountain cabin in the middle of nowhere.

Route: Abertamy -> Hřebečná -> Červená jáma -> Ryzovna | Distance: 12 km | Duration: 4 hours

🧀 Gourmet tip: Abertamy goat cheese

After your hike, you should definitely stop at the cheese dairy in Abertamy. The local mountain cheese and Czech cuisine there are the perfect reward for a day in the rugged outdoors.
