Marienfels: The prime viewing spot above the forests of Bohemian Switzerland
If there is one place that perfectly captures the majestic feeling of Bohemian Switzerland, it is the Marienfels (Mariina vyhlídka). High above the picturesque village of Jetřichovice (Dittersbach), a small wooden hut sits perched atop a steep sandstone pinnacle. Those who climb the steps to the summit are rewarded with a 360-degree panorama that captivated hikers from all over Europe in 2026.
📍 Everything at a glance
- Starting altitude: Jetřichovice (approx. 230 m nm)
- Summit height: 428 m nm
- Ascent: Approximately 30–45 minutes (steep, but well-developed)
- Difficulty: Moderate difficulty (many stairs)
The Ascent: A Staircase Run to Heaven
The trail to Marienfels begins in the center of Jetřichovice and follows the red markings (European long-distance hiking trail E3). The path initially leads through shady woods before transitioning to steep steps and secured ladders hewn into the rock. In 2026, the trails and the mountain hut at the summit were modernized, ensuring a safe ascent despite the steepness.
🌅 Sunrise hotspot
Marienfels is a photographer’s paradise. When the fog lies in the valleys and the sun rises behind the hills, the atmosphere is magical.
🏚️ The new cabin
The iconic wooden arbor has been faithfully reconstructed and offers shelter as well as a fantastic panoramic view over Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland.
Combination options for your hike
The Marienfels is often just the first stop on a longer hike. Experienced hikers continue along the ridge.
- Vilemínina stěna (Wilhelmine Wall): Just about 15 minutes further on, this rock offers the best view back towards the Marienfels and its hut.
- Rudolfův kámen (Rudolfstein): The third peak in the group, which is climbed via steep ladders and offers an even wilder panorama.
- Flatly: A circular route of approximately 8-10 km leads back to Jetřichovice via all three viewpoints.
💡 Insider knowledge: Why “Marienfels”?
The rock was named after Princess Marie Christine von Kinsky in the 19th century. The Kinsky family played a key role in the early development of tourism in the region and had the first mountain hut built as early as 1856.
A visit to Marienfels is an unforgettable experience. The vastness of the landscape and the striking silhouette of the rock make it the centerpiece of any hiking trip through North Bohemia.. Hezký výlet! (Have a nice trip!)
