The ultimate travel guide for the Bohemian Switzerland National Park
What? Where? How?
Until about a year ago, I honestly had never heard of Bohemian Switzerland, even though I had previously visited the neighboring cities of Dresden in Germany and Prague in the Czech Republic. This already shows how hidden and remote this natural paradise is. But don’t let the name fool you! Bohemian Switzerland has nothing to do with Switzerland. Instead, it’s located in the beautiful Czech Republic and is easily accessible from Prague by train, car, or bicycle.
A hidden gem
This often overlooked corner of the country deserves all the attention it gets. After five wonderful days there, I can happily report that it was a true highlight. Here you will find all the essential travel information to discover Bohemian Switzerland.

My trip to Bohemian Switzerland was kindly sponsored by CzechTourism and the Ústí Region. As always, all opinions are my own. This page contains affiliate links, which means Big World Small Pockets may receive a small commission on purchases made through them, at no extra cost to you.
Why visit Bohemian Switzerland?
Nature, adventure and authentic experiences
There are many reasons to visit Bohemian Switzerland. The breathtaking scenery, fantastic hiking trails, amazing cycling routes, and delicious beer are just a few. Another big advantage: this region is perfect for anyone who wants to explore the Czech Republic off the beaten track. Here you can experience authentic Czech life, far from the international tourist crowds.
Slowing down and adventure
If you’re planning a short European trip, rushing from one historic city to the next, Bohemian Switzerland is the perfect escape. Here you can unwind, relax, and enjoy nature. But that’s not all: Bohemian Switzerland is also a dream for active travelers. Hiking, cycling, canoeing, climbing – there are countless opportunities to get active and enjoy the fresh air.
A paradise for beer lovers
And let’s not forget the many craft beers and microbreweries to discover here. Whether you’re a fan of outdoor activities or simply a lover of beautiful landscapes and good beer, Bohemian Switzerland has something for everyone.
Best time to travel
Summer paradise
Bohemian Switzerland lies on the edge of Eastern Europe and is best visited in summer. From May to September, you can expect warm sunny days, blue skies, and pleasant temperatures between 18 and 33 degrees Celsius. This is the perfect time to enjoy nature and outdoor activities.
Avoid winter
The winter months from October to April can be quite cold and wet here, which makes outdoor activities somewhat difficult. If you have the opportunity, you should therefore plan your visit for the warmer months.
Avoiding tourist crowds
July and August are peak travel season in Europe, and Bohemian Switzerland also gets quite crowded then. If you prefer a quieter experience, you should plan your visit for May, June, or September. I also visited Bohemian Switzerland in August, and although it was quite busy, the atmosphere was still very relaxed compared to Prague.
Where is Bohemian Switzerland located?
Geographical location
Bohemian Switzerland is located in northwestern Czechia, in the Ústí nad Labem region. Historically, it was part of the Kingdom of Bohemia, which explains its somewhat misleading name. The main access point is the small town of Děčín, just 10 km from the German border. The Elbe River flows through here, and the landscape is characterized by impressive rock formations and deep forests.
Near the German border
This area is so close to the German province of Saxony that the national park even extends across the border, where it is known as Saxon Switzerland. A visit to this region therefore offers the unique opportunity to explore two countries in one holiday.
Practical tips
Remember that the currency in the Czech Republic is the Czech crown, not the euro. It’s worth bringing a Wise card to avoid unnecessary transaction fees.
Getting from Prague to Bohemian Switzerland
Various transport options
Bohemian Switzerland is about 125 kilometers from Prague and easily accessible. Even a day trip from Prague is possible. There are excellent options that include transportation, an English-speaking guide, lunch, and drinks.
By car or train
The drive takes about an hour and a half. The views become increasingly beautiful as you get further out of the city. Traveling by train is also easy and comfortable. A direct train from Prague’s main train station (Hlavní nádraží) to Děčín takes less than two hours and costs around €8. The journey offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
By bicycle
For the adventurous, there’s even the option of cycling from Prague to Bohemian Switzerland. A designated route leads all the way to Dresden and on to Hamburg in Germany. Active Point in Děčín offers a wealth of helpful information and tailor-made itineraries for this route.
Public transport in Děčín
Once you arrive in Děčín, you can take public bus number 434, which will take you directly to the entrance of the national park. The bus stop you are looking for is Mezní Louka.
Day trips to Bohemian Switzerland
Organized tours
Since Bohemian Switzerland is so easily accessible, day trips from Prague or Dresden are very popular. Many opt for organized tours that include round-trip transportation and a guided hike in the national park. The main attractions are the Pravčická Gate, the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe, and the picturesque Hřensko Gorge.
Multi-day stays recommended
A day trip doesn’t really do Bohemian Switzerland justice. To truly appreciate the peace and beauty of this region and experience the full range of outdoor activities, you should plan at least two to three days. I myself spent four days there and still felt there was more to discover.
Itinerary through the Bohemian Switzerland National Park
Main attractions
Bohemian Switzerland National Park is the heart of this region. Here you can admire the largest sandstone arch in Europe, take a boat trip through breathtaking gorges, and explore numerous hiking and cycling trails. The landscape is characterized by towering sandstone formations, dense forests, and impressive viewpoints.
Outdoor activities
Besides hiking and cycling, you can also enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and climbing. The national park offers well-maintained and clearly marked hiking trails that wind through the idyllic landscape. A canoe or kayak trip on the Elbe River is a particularly beautiful way to experience nature.
Admission and costs
Entry to the national park is free. Access to the Pravčická Gate costs around €3, and the boat trip through the gorge is also very affordable. A popular day trip includes a canoe or kayak trip from Děčín to Schmilka in Germany, followed by a return bike ride along the river.
Excursions, tours and activities in Bohemian Switzerland
Diverse possibilities
Bohemian Switzerland offers a wealth of outdoor activities. Besides hiking, cycling, and canoeing, there are also opportunities for climbing along the Via Ferrata in Děčín. Active Point offers equipment and guided tours, and many activities can also be enjoyed without a guide.
Apps and maps
For hiking and cycling, I recommend the maps.me app, which also works offline and is very helpful. However, if you prefer a guide, Active Point offers day trips starting from €10, with one of their most popular tours (including canoe and bike rental) costing only €24 per person.
Accommodation options in Bohemian Switzerland
Accommodation in Děčín
If you’re spending several days in Bohemian Switzerland, Děčín is the ideal starting point. It offers a good selection of accommodations, restaurants, and bars. The Hotel Ceska Crown provides affordable comfort in a central location. Alternatively, Kemp Děčín offers campsites, yurts, and cabins right on the riverbank. Bicycles and canoes/kayaks are also available for rent there.
Currency and ATMs
Cash vs. Cards
The currency in Bohemian Switzerland is the Czech crown (CZK). While larger towns and tourist attractions accept credit cards, you will often need cash in more remote areas. ATMs are easy to find in towns like Děčín, so make sure you carry enough cash for more rural areas.
Bohemian Switzerland is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. With its breathtaking scenery, diverse outdoor activities, and charming villages, this region offers everything your heart desires. Be sure to allow plenty of time to truly experience the beauty and tranquility of this unique landscape.
