Kyselka: In the Footsteps of the Mineral Water King Heinrich Mattoni
Located just a few kilometers downstream from Karlovy Vary, in the deep valley of the Ohře river, lies a place whose name still shines on mineral water labels worldwide: Kyselka. Here, in the 19th century, the visionary entrepreneur Heinrich Mattoni created a spa paradise that once rivaled the grandeur of Karlovy Vary itself. Today, it is a must-visit for fans of historic architecture and “Lost Places.”
The Rise to a World-Class Spa
Heinrich Mattoni took over the local mineral spring in 1867 and transformed Kyselka into a luxurious resort. He commissioned magnificent villas, colonnades, and sanatoriums in the Neo-Renaissance and Swiss chalet styles. Even Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi) was a fan of Kyselka’s water. The famous “Mattoni water” was exported from here across the globe—a success that brought immense wealth and fame to the town.
Architecture Between Decay and Rescue
After decades of neglect during the communist era and the years following the velvet revolution, the once-grand buildings fell into disrepair. However, in recent years, a major rescue operation has begun:
- The Mattoni Museum: Housed in the former “Löschner Spring” facility, this modern museum documents the history of mineral water and the Mattoni family legacy.
- The Lindenhof (Lázeňský dům): Once the social heart of the spa, this grand building is currently undergoing step-by-step renovation.
- The Romantic Ruins: Structures like the Villa Mattoni or the Stallburg House still radiate their former glory despite their condition, making them favorite subjects for photographers.
Nature at its Best: The Eger Cycle Path and Lookout Tower
Kyselka is more than just architectural history. The town is idyllically nestled at the foot of the Doupov Mountains. A hiking trail leads up to the Bučina Lookout Tower, offering a spectacular panoramic view over the Ohře valley. Additionally, the popular Eger Cycle Path (Ohře trail) runs directly through the town, making Kyselka a perfect stop for cyclists.
📍 Visitor Tip
Don’t miss a visit to the Otto Spring (Ottův pramen). It is located within a beautiful, historic wooden colonnade right by the main road. Here, you can taste the world-famous mineral water directly from the source—completely for free! It’s a good idea to bring your own bottle to fill up for the rest of your journey.
