Long-distance hike from the Jizera Mountains to the Giant Mountains – complete stages & tips

This multi-day long-distance hike connects two of the most distinctive mountain regions of North Bohemia: the quiet, unspoiled Jizera Mountains and the mighty, high-alpine Giant Mountains. Over four to five days, you’ll hike along high-altitude trails, through dense forests, across open moorland, and finally to the impressive snow pits. The route is ideal for hikers who appreciate nature, tranquility, and clear trail markings. At approximately 70 kilometers long, with diverse scenery and numerous panoramic viewpoints, this trail is one of the most beautiful long-distance hikes in the region.

📅 Stage 1 – Liberec → Bedřichov → Jizerka

Distance: ~17 km · 650 m elevation gain 350 hm · Time: 5–6 h

The first day begins on the outskirts of Liberec, where the urban environment quickly gives way to tranquil forest paths. The climb to Bedřichov is moderate and perfect for easing into the tour. Beyond Bedřichov, the typical landscapes of the Jizera Mountains unfold: expansive high moors, granite outcrops, and quiet forest tracks. The closer you get to Jizerka, the more open the landscape becomes. This historic town lies picturesquely nestled among wide open spaces and wooden houses – an atmospheric end to the first day.

📅 Stage 2 – Jizerka → Smrk → Hejnice

Distance: ~16 km · 550 hm · 800 hm · Time: 5–6 h

The second day leads directly up to Smrk, the highest peak in the Jizera Mountains. The ascent is sustained but well-marked. At the top, a sweeping view opens up across the entire border region. The high-altitude trail here is one of the most beautiful and peaceful sections of the tour. Afterwards, a long descent to Hejnice follows, sometimes steep, but wonderfully varied in scenery. Hejnice is a quiet village with an impressive basilica – an ideal place to rest.

This stage marks the transition from the Jizera Mountains to the Giant Mountains. The day begins with a steady climb out of the valley – ideal for settling into a comfortable hiking rhythm. The forested sections become less frequent, while scree slopes and open areas with mountain views appear more often. On the descent to Harrachov, the proximity of tourist infrastructure becomes apparent. Harrachov itself is known for its glassworks, waterfalls, and vibrant mountain atmosphere.

📅 Stage 4 – Harrachov → Snow Pits → Špindlerův Mlýn

Distance: ~17 km · 500 hm · 700 hm · Time: 5–6 h

The fourth day is the most impressive of the entire tour. The ascent to the high plateau of the Giant Mountains is moderate but steady. At the top, the trail leads past the famous Snow Pits – two enormous glacial cirques that almost resemble alpine landscapes. The panoramic views are among the most spectacular in the entire mountain range. From there, a long high-altitude trail is followed before a well-marked path leads down to Špindlerův Mlýn, the most famous mountain village in the Giant Mountains.

⭐ Optional stage 5 – Špindlerův Mlýn → Sněžka → Pec pod Sněžkou

Distance: ~15 km · 800 hm · 750 m elevation gain Time: 6–7 h

The additional queen stage leads to the summit of Sněžka, the highest mountain in the Czech Republic. The path is rocky and challenging, but rewards hikers with breathtaking panoramic views. The descent to Pec pod Sněžkou completes the tour and offers numerous return journey options. Adding this stage provides a complete north-south traverse of the Giant Mountains.
