The charm of Marienbad: healing springs, architecture & insider tips
Even kings and emperors once enjoyed the healing waters of Marienbad (Mariánské Lázně) in their ornately decorated spouted cups. The spa town in western Bohemia was also very popular with poets and thinkers. Although Marienbad doesn’t possess the sophisticated allure of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), it is a true gem, full of tranquility, elegance, and healing springs.
🌍 UNESCO World Heritage at a glance
Together with Karlovy Vary and Františkovy Lázně, Mariánské Lázně forms the famous West Bohemian Spa Triangle – a UNESCO World Heritage Site of the most important spa towns of Europe.
- 💧 Variety of sources: There are a total of 40 mineral springs within the city limits, and over 100 in the surrounding area.
- Architecture Style: Breathtaking Art Nouveau architecture and extensive parklands.
- 🌿 Atmosphere: Harmonious, green, and instantly calming.
The story of Marienbad: From swamp to world-class spa
As early as the 13th century, the monks of Tepl Abbey recognized the healing properties of the mineral springs in the marshy valley near the abbey. The first documented spa treatment took place in 1609 – at that time still in simple huts without any comforts. It was Abbot Karl Reitenberger who initiated the transformation: forests were cleared, swamps drained, paths laid out, and impressive spa hotels built.
Marienbad reached its zenith in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Famous figures such as Franz Kafka, Frédéric Chopin, and Thomas Alva Edison sought treatment or inspiration here. During the socialist era, the magnificent princely residences were converted into state-run sanatoriums, before being restored to their former glory after 1990.
The most important springs and colonnades
Maxim Gorky Colonnade
The magnificent main colonnade, at 180 meters, is the longest of its kind in the Czech Republic. It impresses with its cast-iron construction, artistic ceiling frescoes, and intricate ornamentation. Together with the Cross Spring and the Small Colonnade, it forms the heart of the spa promenade.
Karolinenquelle & Rudolfquelle
At the eastern end of the spa promenade, visitors will find the Karolinenquelle spring, whose waters are particularly rich in magnesium (beneficial for urological conditions). The neighboring Rudolfquelle spring is rich in calcium and is especially helpful for inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract and osteoporosis. Both springs are housed in picturesque pavilions.
Ferdinand Spring & Alexander Spring
The Ferdinand Spring in Auschowitz Park is the oldest spring in the city and tastes salty due to its high Glauber’s salt content (ideal for digestive problems). Not far from it lies the Alexander Spring, beautifully framed by a particularly photogenic wooden pavilion.
🎶 The Melodic Fountain (Singing Fountain)
Anyone visiting Marienbad shouldn’t miss the Singing Fountain. Every odd hour, water, light, and music dance in a harmonious choreography. The show is a real highlight, especially in the evening!
Churches & Cultural Moments
- Church of the Assumption of Mary: It sits enthroned above the Caroline Spring. Built in the mid-19th century in the Neo-Byzantine style, it is a place of tranquility right in the center.
- Russian Orthodox Church of Saint Vladimir: An architectural treasure with a Greek cross floor plan and an ornate majolica iconostasis. A sea of color, gold, and sacred symbolism.
Wellness & modern spa treatments
Today, local hotels offer professional treatments such as mud packs, classic baths, gas inhalations, and therapeutic massages. Those simply seeking relaxation will find rejuvenating wellness packages, sauna complexes, and thermal pools that combine tradition with modern healing methods.

Walks & nature tours
Kladská – natural idyll in the Imperial Forest
A few kilometers outside Marienbad lies Kladská, a small, fairytale-like ensemble of wooden villas, a hunting lodge, and an inn. The natural circular trail through the Glatzener Moor leads you safely across wooden boardwalks. Especially in autumn, the Kaiserwald forest glows with intense colors.
Karlovy Vary – Excursion to the famous neighboring spa
Karlovy Vary is the most sophisticated spa town in the spa triangle. Known for its 12 hot springs, the impressive Mill Colonnade, and the elegant Stará Louka promenade, a trip here can be perfectly combined with a visit to Mariánské Lázně. Don’t forget to try the traditional Karlovy Vary wafers and Becherovka!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Marienbad
Yes, access to the springs in the colonnades and pavilions is free and public. However, for a genuine drinking cure, it is recommended to consult a spa physician beforehand.
The fountain operates every odd hour during the spa season (early May to late October). The evening shows at 9:00 pm and 10:00 pm also include an impressive light show.
