Experience Prague in spring – my personal tips from April onwards
If you ask me, there’s hardly a better time to visit. Prague than spring – especially from April 1st onwards. The city slowly awakens from its winter slumber, the first rays of sunshine touch historic facades, and flowers begin to bloom everywhere. It’s precisely then that the Czech capital reveals one of its most beautiful sides. I’ve compiled my personal recommendations here to help you make the most of your spring trip.
🌸 Nature & Gardens – when Prague blossoms
For me, spring in Prague clearly begins in the gardens. Many of them are closed in winter and only reopen at the beginning of April – and that’s precisely what makes them so appealing.
An absolute highlight is the Petřín Park. Here, the fruit trees are in bloom in white and pink – a picture-perfect postcard scene. Important to know: The cable car is currently out of service, so be prepared for a short but rewarding climb. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent view over the city.
If you prefer something a little quieter, I recommend the Vojan Gardens (Vojanovy sady) In the Lesser Town. A hidden gem that many tourists don’t even know about. Here you’ll find blooming magnolias, apple trees, and even peacocks roaming freely – a truly special atmosphere.
It lies a little outside the city Troy Castle with his Botanical Garden. Perfect if you have more time. The cherry blossoms around the castle are impressive, and the extensive garden is perfect for long walks.
You shouldn’t miss the baroque gardens either: The Waldstein Garden (free and beautiful), the Vrtba Garden – one of the most beautiful in Europe – and the terraced gardens below the castle offer fantastic views and quiet corners in the heart of the city.
🥚 Traditions & Events in Spring
Spring in Prague is not only beautiful, but also full of traditions. It becomes especially vibrant around Easter.
The Easter markets The markets in Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square are simply a must for me. They usually start about two weeks before Easter and run for another week after. Here you can try regional specialties and discover handmade souvenirs.
A special tradition is the Pomlázka – a braided willow switch, with which women are symbolically “beaten” to bring them health and beauty. It sounds unusual, but it is firmly part of Czech culture.
Culinary-wise, you should definitely try the Green Beer (Zelené pivo) Try it. It is only served around Maundy Thursday and is primarily a visual highlight.
The experience is also truly special. Witch burning on April 30th. There are large bonfires all over Prague, especially on the island. Kampa. The atmosphere is relaxed, many people are dressing up, and it almost feels like a big spring festival.
🛶 Experience the Vltava
As soon as it gets warmer, life shifts to the Moldau. For me, a boat trip is simply a must – and you have several options.
If you prefer comfort, you can take a longer river cruise with a buffet. Personally, however, I find that you often spend too much time in locks.
A good alternative is short tours directly along the Charles Bridge. Providers like “Venice Boats” offer tours lasting less than an hour, often including small snacks and even museum admission.
My personal favorite: pedal boats. For about 300 CZK you get the most flexible and cheapest option here – and can discover Prague from the water in a completely relaxed way.
🏛️ Culture & Indoor highlights
April can be quite changeable in terms of weather, so I recommend that you also plan some indoor options.
The National Museum After its renovation, it is a real highlight – both architecturally and in terms of content.
A hidden gem is the Clam-Gallas Palace. Less crowded, but incredibly impressive if you are interested in baroque interior design.
That too State House (Obecní dům) You should definitely check it out. Art Nouveau at its finest. I recommend a guided tour – and afterwards a slice of cake in the café.
🏰 Day trips around Prague
If you have more than three days, it’s worth taking a look at the surrounding area. Connections are good, whether by train or car.
The Blatná Castle It is particularly known for its tame fallow deer. They roam freely in the park and often come very close – a wonderful experience.
A classic is Kutná Hora, only about an hour away. The famous ossuary (bone church) in particular is a place you won’t soon forget.
That too Lány CastleThe President’s summer residence offers you spacious parks and plenty of peace and quiet – perfect for a relaxing stroll.
My tip: Plan your visit with some flexibility in mind. Prague in spring thrives on spontaneous moments – be it a stroll through blooming gardens, a beer in the sun, or an evening by the water. That’s precisely what makes this time of year so special.
